BEHAVIOR/HABITAT: This stocky plover haunts the outer beaches. Nests only in Arctic, but some occur at all seasons on southern coastlines. Mostly scarce migrant in interior.
IDENTIFYING MARKS: 11 1/2"; Short thick bill. In winter, mottled back and chest. In flight, note black wing pits, whitish rump and tail.
VOICE: Mournful whistle dropping in middle wheeyoo-wee.
