HABITAT/BEHAVIOR: Fairly common but localized in mountain pine forest of Pacific states.
IDENTIFYING MARKS: 9"; Black body and white head are diagnostic. Male has a red patch on back of head. Large white patch on outer part of wing, more obvious in flight.
