If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

COMMON NAME: Cinnamon Teal

SPECIES: Anas cyanoptera

LOCATION: Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, Orange County, CA

From Stokes Field Guide to Birds-Western Region & Kaufman Focus Guide-Bird of North America:

BEHAVIOR/HABITAT: Common in western marshes, but departs from colder regions in winter. 

IDENTIFYING MARKS: 16"; Male: head, neck and body dark cinnamon; wings and back blackish. In eclipse plumage, male is similar to female, but has rustier plumage and a yellow or orange iris. Female: similar to female Blue-winged Teal, with green speculum and light area at base of gill. Differs by having a darker, more uniformly colored head; little or no eye stripe, especially past the eye; and a faint light area at base of bill.

VOICE: Female sounds like Blue-winged teal (high-pitched quacking). Male give a series of chuk notes.
