If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

LOCATION: 3 observed at sandy beach near Malibu Creek Lagoon (access from Cross Creek Road off of Pacific Coast Highway). Malibu Creek State Park, Los Angeles County, CA

From Kaufman Focus Guide: Birds of North America:

HABITAT: The most widespread curlew. Migrates in flocks along all coasts, but scarce in interior, except around Great Lakes and Salton Sea. Nests on Arctic tundra; migrants and wintering birds are found on mudflats, beaches, flooded fields. 

IDENTIFYING MARKS: 17"; Larger than most shorebirds, with downcurved bill. Overall plain gray-brown, but has strong black head stripes. Very plain looking in flight, with no contrasting colors in wings or tail. 

VOICE: Fast whistled wi-wi-wi-wi-wi often given in flight.
