BEHAVIOR/HABITAT: Our largest buteo, usually uncommon on western grasslands. Sometimes seen sitting on the ground in open fields.
IDENTIFYING MARKS: 23" w56"; Variable. Typical adult pale, with rufous shoulders and thigh feathers; whitish tail washed with rufous toward tip.
VOICE: near nest, a high keeyah.
