If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

BEHAVIOR/HABITAT: The smallest of our accipiters is also usually the most common, especially in the east. It favors dense woods but sometimes comes into suburbs, where it may nab small birds near feeders. 

IDENTIFYING MARKS: 9-13" w 20-26"; Adults blue-gray above, pale reddish below; young brown above, striped below. Small size is sometimes apparent. Tip of tail usually looks squared off. Also looks small-headed and has pencil-thin legs. 

VOICE: In alarm near nest, a harsh kee-kee-kee-kee...
