If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

LOCATION: Abundant near amphitheater at Chilao Visitor Center, Angeles National Forest, Los Angeles County, CA

HABITAT: Common in leafy forest, also thrives in parks and suburbs with big trees. Visits bird feeders for sunflower seeds or suet. In winter, often travels in flocks with chickadees and other birds. 

IDENTIFYING MARKS: 6"; dark crown and nape; white face; gray back. Varying amounts of reddish brown on rump and flanks. Sexes differ in color of crown and back. Male: glossy black crown and nape; blue-gray back. Female; Gray or dull black crown and nape; gray back. 

VOICE: Song is werwerwerwer calls include contact notes of ip and ank ank, the latter given in a rapid series during aggressive encounters.
