If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

SPECIES: Brotogeris chiriri

FAMILY: Psittacidae (Parrots)

LIFE LIST DATE5/25/2002

LOCATION: Los Angeles County Arboretum, Arcadia, CA

From National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America:

HABITAT/IDENTIFYING MARKS: 8 1/2"; From southern Amazon to northern Argentina. Now outnumbers White-winged in south of California and Florida. Once considered same species, but note yellow-green body color; no white in primaries and secondaries.

From The California Parrot Project:

The California population trend was not established in California until after the early 1970s, with great increases taking place mainly in the late 1980s and 1990s (Garrett 1997).
Numbers appear to be increasing in the San Gabriel Valley, the San Fernando Valley, and the Los Angeles Basin. This parakeet tends to be associated with cultivated date palms and Silk Floss Trees (Chorisia speciosa).
