If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

HABITAT/BEHAVIOR: Common and familiar almost everywhere, from wilderness to city parks. Often seen running and hopping on lawns, hunting earthworms. Nest (built with  mud and grass) is sometimes placed on windowsills. In winter, gathers in large flocks to feed on berries, wild fruit. Winter range varies from year to year, with large flocks sometimes invading southern areas. 

IDENTIFYING MARKS: 10"; Brick red chest, gray back, streaks on white chin. Small white spots around eyes and (usually) on tail corners. Male usually has blacker head, slighter richer colors than female. Juvenile can be confusing at first; heavily spotted slow, mottled on back, pale marks on face. Look for reddish tinge on chest. 

VOICE: Rich caroling cheerup cheerio cheerup, often beginning well before dawn. Call notes at thin seleeet; chuckling tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh.
