HABITAT/BEHAVIOR: A spike-billed bird of mountains, often at high elevations, near treelike. Fearless around campgrounds and scenic overlooks, seeking handouts. Gathers and buries large numbers of pine seeds in fall, finds them to eat during winter.
IDENTIFYING MARKS: 13"; gray with black wings; black central tail feathers. Main food is pinyon or whitebark pine nuts, which it caches.
