HABITAT/BEHAVIOR: This open country bird has prospered with the clearing of forests. Very common today, its nests parasitism threatens populations of some smaller birds. Named for habit of feeding near cattle and other grazers, cowbirds walk on ground with tails held up. Often flocks with other blackbirds in winter.
IDENTIFYING MARKS: 7 1/2"; Male glossy black with contrasting brown head. Female confusing, plain dusty brown with dark sparrow like bill. Juvenile streaked at first.
