If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

Short-Eared Owl (Asio flammeus)


7/3/05 If you look really hard, you will see a short-eared owl in flight over the wetlands. That was as good a shot as I could get because of the limitations of my camera back then. Viewing area off Hwy. 395 just south of County Road 56 in Alturas, Modoc County, CA

IDENTIFYING MARKS: 15"; medium-sized; often seen hating at dusk over fields and marched; dark areas surround yellow eyes, like sunglasses; boldly streaked chest; light belly. Although it has short ear tufts, these are rarely seen.

VOICE: Low-pitched hoo in a long series, given while perched or flying; also various snarls, squeals, and barking calls.
