HABITAT/BEHAVIOR: This elegant wader is our most widespread white egret, often seen standing like a statue along the edges of lakes and marshes. Egret populations were decimated by hunting for their feathers by about 1900; their recovery was largely thanks to efforts by the Audubon Society, newly formed at that time.
IDENTIFYING MARKS: 39"; a large heron with a yellow bill and black legs. Immature is similar to adult. In breeding season adults of both sexes have long white plumes growing on their back.
