If you're a birder, you'll know what a life list is. It's basically a list of all the bird species one has observed and positively ID'd in one's lifetime. This blog is a record of my "critter" life list (mostly of birds), including photos I've taken over the years, some of the actual lifer if I was lucky enough to get the shot. Don't expect National Geographic quality stuff here, just the work of an amateur photog who loves to trudge out into nature.

Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus)

What's more thrilling than the trilling of a spotted towhee? Ok, that sounded kinda hokey. But, it's kinda sorta true...Anyhoo, spotted towhees are, in my book, the peacocks of the otherwise, generally monochromatic towhee clan, with their striking black hoods and backs, white spots on the wings and back, all contrasting nicely with their reddish-brown & white underparts. And to top it off, what about those red eyes?!!!

Of all places, I saw my lifer at the Mid Hills campground in the East Mojave back in 2002. They seem to be common and ubiquitous in many varied habitats, including here on our property in La Cresta.
